The Zamfara State Police Command has foiled an attempted bandit attack on security personnel in Zurmi Local Government Area and prevented a suspected explosive threat along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
The two incidents occurred on August 12, 2026, according to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar.
The first incident occurred at the Zurmi Muslims’ Praying Ground along Rukudawa Road, where police personnel had been deployed to provide security during a tree-planting exercise.
According to the police, armed bandits attacked the security team while the exercise was underway. The officers reportedly took cover and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing the bandits to retreat into a nearby forest.
The police said evidence recovered from the scene, including significant traces of blood from the attackers’ position, suggested that some of the bandits may have sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange.
The attackers were reportedly believed to have withdrawn into the forest with the bodies of some of their colleagues.
Despite the intensity of the attack, the police confirmed that no security personnel or civilian was killed.
In a separate incident on the same day, a suspected landmine or improvised explosive device exploded along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
The explosion reportedly caused panic among residents and motorists using the route. However, the police said there were no deaths or injuries resulting from the incident.
Following the explosion, the command deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to the area. The team was escorted by personnel from the Violence Crime Response Unit as they conducted a detailed sweep of the affected area.
The police said the EOD team successfully rendered the area safe for commuters and other road users.
Security patrols have since been intensified along the road and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks and detect possible explosive threats.
The police command has also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, abandoned objects or other activities that could pose a security threat.
The latest operations come amid continued security challenges in parts of Zamfara State, where bandit groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and other criminal activities.
The command said joint security operations would continue across affected areas to protect residents, secure major roads and disrupt criminal groups operating in the state.
