Adeboye gave the advice on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while preaching at the RCCG National Headquarters in Lagos during a special Thanksgiving Service and prayer session organised for members of the legal profession and their families. The service was held under the theme “Wonderful Counselor.”
According to the cleric, believers should begin each day with joy rather than allowing worries about past experiences or future problems to dominate their thoughts. He encouraged people to wake up with an attitude of praise and deliberately choose to rejoice despite the difficulties they may be facing.
Adeboye said people should not allow the past to control their present circumstances. He encouraged worshippers to begin their mornings positively, arguing that those who trust God should not allow fear about tomorrow to overwhelm them.
He also urged Nigerians to develop a consistent prayer life, particularly when confronted with problems that could produce anxiety. Rather than becoming consumed by their difficulties, he advised believers to take their concerns to God and make their requests known through prayer.
For Adeboye, prayer should not be reserved for moments of crisis. He presented it as a continuing practice through which believers can place their concerns before God instead of allowing those concerns to dominate their lives. His message was therefore centred not only on praying when problems arise but on making prayer part of a person's everyday routine.
The third part of his counsel was thanksgiving. Adeboye urged believers to give thanks regardless of their circumstances and warned against allowing difficult situations to determine their outlook on life.
He linked the three practices to the biblical instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–17, which calls on believers to rejoice always and pray continually, while the following verse instructs them to give thanks in all circumstances. His message presented the scripture as a practical guide for maintaining faith and a positive outlook during difficult periods.
Adeboye also spoke about the importance of faith when discussing mistakes and difficult situations. Referring to Romans 8:31, he described Jesus as an advocate for believers and told the congregation that even when people make mistakes, they can turn to God rather than allow guilt and fear to overwhelm them.
The message comes at a time when anxiety and financial, social and personal pressures remain common concerns for many Nigerians. Adeboye's advice was presented primarily as a Christian response to such pressures, with emphasis on faith, prayer, joy and gratitude.
His comments, however, should be understood as religious counsel rather than a medical claim that prayer, rejoicing or thanksgiving alone can treat an anxiety disorder. People experiencing severe or persistent anxiety may require professional mental-health support in addition to whatever spiritual practices they find helpful.
The central message from Adeboye was that believers should not allow fear of the future or difficult circumstances to determine how they live each day. Instead, he encouraged them to approach each morning with joy, maintain regular communication with God through prayer and continue giving thanks even when circumstances are difficult.
By placing rejoicing, prayer and thanksgiving together, Adeboye's message offered his congregation a simple three-part approach to dealing with the pressures of everyday life: choose joy, take worries to God and remain grateful regardless of circumstances.
