Argentina international Enzo Fernández has explained his decision to leave Chelsea for Manchester City, saying the club’s winning mentality, strong squad and desire to continue challenging for major trophies were key factors behind his move.
The 25-year-old midfielder completed his transfer to Manchester City from Chelsea for a British-record-equalling £125 million fee. He has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
Fernández said he was attracted by Manchester City’s recent success and the club’s reputation for maintaining a high standard of football.
“Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times. Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are,” Fernández said.
The midfielder added that he was excited about the opportunity to help City win more silverware while improving his own game by working alongside the club’s talented squad.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success,” he said.
Fernández also highlighted the quality of his new teammates and said he intends to learn from them as he adapts to his new surroundings.
“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player,” he added.
The move also reunites Fernández with Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea and is now Manchester City manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Fernández leaves Chelsea after three-and-a-half seasons at Stamford Bridge. He joined the London club from Benfica for £107 million in January 2023 and went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders.
During his Chelsea career, he helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. He also enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions.
Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure, Fernández expressed his gratitude to Chelsea and the supporters, saying the club would remain in his heart.
His arrival represents a major statement of intent from Manchester City, who have invested heavily in their midfield during the summer transfer window. The club have also brought in Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi as part of a major squad rebuild.
Fernández is now expected to play a central role in City’s attempt to reclaim the Premier League title and compete for major honours under Maresca.
He has promised to give everything to his new club, saying his commitment and work ethic will remain unchanged.
“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here,” Fernández said.
