The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise to reward members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship victory.
Each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000 as part of the reward package approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of the team’s outstanding achievement on the continental stage. The National Sports Commission confirmed that the players’ and officials’ accounts had been credited, completing the cash aspect of the presidential reward.
The reward followed D’Tigress’ remarkable performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, where they defeated Mali 78–64 in the final to claim their seventh continental title and extend their dominance in African women’s basketball.
Beyond the financial reward, the Federal Government had earlier announced additional recognition for the team, including the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the players and technical crew, as well as housing benefits.
The government’s decision was aimed at recognising the commitment, discipline and consistency of a team that has become one of Africa’s most successful sporting sides. D’Tigress have built a reputation for excellence, winning five consecutive AfroBasket titles and establishing themselves as a dominant force in women’s basketball on the continent.
The reward also represents a broader conversation about how Nigeria values and supports its athletes. For many years, Nigerian sports personalities have raised concerns about welfare, preparation, incentives and the need for stronger investment in sporting development.
While financial rewards after major victories can motivate athletes, sports experts often argue that sustainable success requires more than bonuses. Investment in grassroots development, training facilities, coaching, sports medicine and long-term athlete welfare remains essential for maintaining international competitiveness.
