Elon Musk has retained his position as the world’s richest person, with an estimated fortune of $892 billion, according to Forbes’ September 2026 ranking of the world’s wealthiest people.
The latest Forbes ranking, based on wealth estimates as of September 1, places Musk comfortably ahead of Google co-founder Larry Page, who ranks second with an estimated $277 billion. The combined wealth of the 10 richest people stands at about $2.8 trillion, according to Forbes.
Musk’s position at the top comes after a dramatic swing in his fortune. Forbes reported that his wealth increased by about $202 billion in August after falling by $363 billion in July. The rebound was driven largely by increases in the value of SpaceX and Tesla.
The September ranking also shows how quickly the billionaire rankings can change because much of the fortunes of the world’s wealthiest individuals are tied to publicly traded companies. Forbes notes that the estimates can change daily as stock prices move.
Page, the Google co-founder, occupies second place with $277 billion, despite losing an estimated $15 billion during August. His fortune has risen sharply over the years, helped largely by his stake in Alphabet, Google’s parent company.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ranks third with $268 billion, while fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin is fourth with $256 billion. Both billionaires saw their estimated fortunes decline during August, but remained firmly among the world's four richest people.
Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell takes fifth place with $241 billion. Dell, who began selling computers from his university dormitory as a teenager, has built his fortune around the technology company that bears his name.
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg ranks sixth with $197 billion, up by an estimated $6 billion from the previous month. His fortune is largely linked to his approximately 13 per cent stake in Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison moved up to seventh place with $193 billion, overtaking Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Ellison added an estimated $25 billion to his fortune during August as Oracle shares gained value.
Huang, whose fortune is closely tied to Nvidia's dominance in artificial intelligence chips, ranks eighth with $191 billion. Forbes estimates that he added $17 billion during August despite falling one position in the ranking.
Former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer is ninth with an estimated $155 billion. Ballmer's fortune comes primarily from his Microsoft holdings, as well as his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, which Forbes now values at roughly $7.5 billion.
Spanish fashion billionaire Amancio Ortega completes the top 10 with $148 billion. The Zara co-founder is the only non-American among the 10 richest people on Forbes’ September ranking, replacing French luxury-goods billionaire Bernard Arnault in the group.
The latest list also highlights the continued dominance of technology and technology-related businesses among the world's richest individuals. Google, Amazon, Dell Technologies, Meta, Oracle, Nvidia and Microsoft-related wealth all feature prominently in the ranking, while Ortega's fortune represents the fashion and retail sector.
Forbes says nine of the 10 richest people on its September 1 ranking are American citizens, with Ortega representing Spain. All 10 are men, and each has an estimated fortune of at least $148 billion.
The rankings also demonstrate the extraordinary scale of wealth accumulated by the world's biggest technology entrepreneurs and investors. Musk alone is estimated to be worth more than three times as much as Page, the second-richest person, according to Forbes.
Forbes has tracked the world's billionaires since 1987 and publishes both an annual billionaire ranking and a real-time list that reflects changes in publicly traded assets. Because the fortunes are closely connected to market movements, the order and net worth figures can change even after a monthly ranking is published.
