Four adults and a 15-year-old girl have been charged following the death of a newborn baby in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in a case that has sparked a murder investigation.
The baby girl was found fatally injured at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of Sheffield on Sunday morning after police received a call expressing concerns for her safety. A post-mortem examination later established that the newborn died from stab wounds.
The four adults charged with murder are two men, aged 19 and 38, and two women, aged 20 and 37. They have also been charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by allegedly taking steps to conceal the killing of the infant.
The defendants have been identified as Peter Horvath, 19; Andrea Skopova, 20; Nina Horvathova, 37; and Peter Horvath, 38.
A 15-year-old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice. She cannot be named because of her age.
South Yorkshire Police said all five suspects have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court.
The charges followed an investigation launched after officers responded to the property on Sunday morning. Detectives have been working to establish the circumstances surrounding the newborn's death and determine what happened inside the property.
The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charges against the four adults following the police investigation. The allegations against the defendants have not been tested in court, and they remain innocent unless proven guilty.
The case has drawn significant attention in Sheffield because of the age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police are continuing their investigation and are expected to provide further information as the legal proceedings get underway.
The five defendants are expected to appear in court as detectives continue gathering evidence and establishing the events that led to the baby's death.
