Gunmen have abducted the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman of Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Fanka, after attacking the community and killing two residents.
The incident occurred around 11pm on Monday when armed men invaded the area and opened sporadic fire, forcing residents to flee for safety.
According to residents familiar with the incident, the attackers targeted Fanka and whisked him away despite attempts by some people to prevent the abduction. Two residents who tried to intervene were reportedly shot dead by the gunmen.
The latest attack has heightened fears among residents as several communities in Kano have come under attack within a matter of days.
Fanka's abduction came barely 24 hours after gunmen reportedly killed another APC official, Garba Buba, the party's chairman in Rantan Ward, Bebeji Local Government Area. Another resident, identified as Sulaiman Zunduma, was also killed during that attack.
The series of attacks has raised fresh concerns over the growing activities of suspected bandits and kidnappers in parts of the state.
Before the Rogo and Bebeji incidents, suspected bandits had attacked Chiromawa community in Garun Mallam Local Government Area, where they abducted the Sarkin Noman Kano, Alhaji Yusif Nadabo.
Nadabo was later rescued following a security response involving the police and local residents, although three people were reportedly injured during the operation.
The attacks in Rogo, Bebeji and Garun Mallam occurred within roughly three days, intensifying calls for stronger security measures to protect residents and political leaders in affected communities.
The Kano State APC Publicity Secretary, Auwalu Sojo, confirmed the abduction of the Rogo chairman, saying Fanka was taken from his family residence in Beli village after returning from a party engagement in a nearby community. Security agencies were subsequently said to have deployed a rescue team to the area.
As of the latest reports, there was no official statement from the Kano State Police Command confirming the identities of the attackers or providing details about the whereabouts of the abducted APC chairman. Attempts to obtain a response from the state police spokesperson were reportedly unsuccessful.
The renewed violence comes as the Federal Government moves to develop a five-year defence and security strategy in response to increasing security challenges across the country.
Minister of State for Defence Bello Muhammad Matawalle had announced the planned strategy on Monday, following a series of attacks and growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Nigeria.
Residents and political stakeholders in Kano are now awaiting further information from security agencies as efforts continue to locate Fanka and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.
