Nigerians who hold academic qualifications but are currently teaching without professional teaching credentials can now apply for the Federal Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway, a six-month programme designed to help non-professional teachers obtain recognised education qualifications and become eligible for registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.
The Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway, known as ATPP, is being implemented as part of the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen teacher professionalism and improve standards in Nigerian classrooms. The programme is targeted at people who already have academic qualifications but lack formal professional teacher training. Applications for the first 2026–2027 cohort are currently open and are scheduled to close on September 18, 2026.
The programme has two qualification routes, depending on the applicant’s existing qualification. Holders of a non-education bachelor’s degree or a Higher National Diploma can apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education, while holders of an Ordinary National Diploma or National Diploma can apply for the Professional Diploma in Education.
Both programmes run for six months. The structure consists of four months of hybrid academic study followed by two months of supervised teaching practice. The PGDE carries 40 credit units, while the PDE carries 37 credit units.
Applicants must already be teaching and generally need at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience to qualify for the two pathways. The programme is open to teachers working in public and non-state schools, as well as those involved in early childhood education, primary and secondary education, technical and vocational education, non-formal education and alternative learning settings. Community instructors and volunteer educators are also included among the categories targeted by the programme.
For BSc holders, the qualification must be in a field other than education. Eligible applicants can apply for the PGDE route if they meet the teaching-experience requirement. HND holders who are already teaching can also apply through the PGDE pathway.
Applicants in these categories will need to provide a valid National Identification Number, their relevant degree or HND certificate and evidence that they have been teaching. Acceptable evidence may include an appointment or employment letter, an attestation from a headteacher, principal or other school authority, or appropriate payment records.
For ND and OND holders, the corresponding route is the Professional Diploma in Education. Applicants must provide their NIN, ND or OND certificate and evidence of classroom teaching experience. Like the PGDE, the PDE combines academic study with supervised practical teaching.
The training covers areas intended to prepare participants for professional classroom responsibilities. These include foundations of education, educational psychology, curriculum and pedagogy, inclusive education and safeguarding, assessment and quality assurance, digital and blended learning, professional ethics and subject methodology.
The ATPP is aligned with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria's professional standards and is intended to provide a pathway from academic qualification to professional teacher recognition. However, completing the six-month programme does not simply mean receiving a certificate and automatically becoming a fully licensed teacher. Candidates must complete the required coursework and teaching practice, satisfy their institution's assessment requirements and sit for and pass the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination.
Successful candidates can then become eligible for TRCN registration in the appropriate category.
The programme is being delivered through accredited institutions and study centres across Nigeria. Participating institutions listed by the ATPP include the National Teachers' Institute, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the University of Lagos, the University of Port Harcourt, the University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Maiduguri, the National Open University of Nigeria, MIVA Open University, Meadow Hall College of Education and Babcock University.
Applicants can begin the process through the ATPP application portal by selecting the appropriate qualification pathway and creating an account with their personal details. They will then be required to provide their email address, telephone number and supporting documents before submitting the application.
The programme's official website lists the cost at ₦200,000 per teacher. Applicants should therefore verify the programme details and payment requirements through the official ATPP platform before making any payment or submitting personal information.
The initiative provides a route for graduates and diploma holders who are already working in classrooms but lack professional teaching qualifications to obtain formal training without having to leave the teaching profession for an extended period. Its success, however, will depend on the quality of the training, supervision and assessment, as well as the ability of the programme to translate certification into stronger teaching standards in classrooms across the country.
With the first cohort's application deadline set for September 18, eligible BSc, HND, ND and OND holders who are already teaching and meet the experience requirement have a limited window to submit their applications.
