Kebbi Police Arrest Man Over Attack on Motorcyclist, Recover Stolen Bike

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Bello Abubakar, over an alleged attack on a commercial motorcyclist and the theft of his motorcycle in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, the incident occurred on August 23, 2026, when 22-year-old Bello Umar, a commercial motorcycle rider from Wasagu Village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, was found with a serious head injury at Tungar Dariya Bush near Makera Village in Shanga.

The victim was taken to Koko General Hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Police investigations reportedly revealed that Abubakar had hired Umar's motorcycle from Koko Town to Tungar Dariya Bush. Upon reaching the isolated location, he allegedly attacked the rider with a hoe, leaving him unconscious.

The suspect allegedly covered the victim with leaves, believing that he had died, before taking the motorcycle and travelling towards Yauri Town.

Investigators subsequently traced the stolen motorcycle and recovered it. The recovery helped the police identify and arrest Abubakar, who is currently assisting investigators with the case.

The police said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, described the alleged attack as a serious assault on human life and livelihood. He warned that the command would continue to pursue individuals targeting commercial motorcycle operators and other law-abiding residents.

The latest arrest comes amid heightened police attention to motorcycle theft in Kebbi. The command recently rescued two men from an angry mob in Birnin Kebbi after they were accused of stealing motorcycles and recovered seven abandoned motorcycles during the incident.

The police have urged residents to report suspected criminal activity rather than resorting to mob action, while assuring the public that allegations will be investigated and suspects prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The allegations against Abubakar have not been established in court, and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
