Kwankwaso Condemns Blockade of Obi’s Convoy, Calls for Protection of Democratic Rights

 The Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned the blockade of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State, describing the incident as a threat to democratic values and freedom of movement.

Kwankwaso reacted after Obi’s convoy was reportedly stopped by protesters along Gboko Road in Makurdi while the former Anambra State governor was visiting Benue. The protesters allegedly blocked the road near the Nigerian Air Force Base and Makurdi Airport, preventing the convoy from immediately proceeding to its destination.

In a statement shared on his official social media account, Kwankwaso described the incident as a worrying development and called on the Benue State Government to identify those responsible and ensure that appropriate action is taken.

He argued that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to freedom of movement, adding that political differences should not result in actions that prevent individuals from travelling freely or carrying out legitimate activities.

Kwankwaso said the reported mobilisation of people to obstruct Obi’s movement represented a setback for democratic culture. He urged authorities to ensure the safety of Obi, members of his entourage and all political actors regardless of their affiliations.

The former Kano State governor also called on political leaders to discourage actions that could undermine democratic freedoms, warning that intimidation and obstruction of opposition figures could damage public confidence in the political system.

The Benue incident occurred as Obi visited the state to express sympathy with communities affected by insecurity. Speaking after the incident, Obi alleged that the protesters were mobilised by individuals connected to the state government, describing the action as unacceptable.

However, the Benue State Government denied involvement, rejecting suggestions that it sponsored or organised anyone to block Obi’s convoy. The government said it had no role in the incident and maintained that it does not support political thuggery.

The disagreement over the incident has created a wider political debate about freedom of movement, opposition activities and the responsibility of state authorities to protect all citizens and political figures.

Beyond the immediate confrontation, the episode highlights concerns about the conduct of political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political competition in a democracy requires that disagreements are handled through dialogue, lawful processes and respect for opposing viewpoints.

For now, the identity of those who blocked the convoy and whether anyone will face investigation remains unclear. While Kwankwaso and Obi have raised concerns about the incident, the full circumstances surrounding the blockade are yet to be completely established.

The development has renewed calls for political tolerance and stronger protection for democratic participation as Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle.
