A Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) evangelist, Abidemi Odukoya, and his wife, Adenike, have died in separate circumstances following a reported domestic altercation at their residence in the Akinode/Ibogun community of Ogun State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 25, 2026, after the couple reportedly became involved in a domestic dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under police investigation.
According to a former chairman of the community development association, Adejimi Olawumi, residents were alerted by cries for help at about 1am. He said he went to the couple's residence and found Adenike seriously injured and lying in a pool of blood.
Olawumi said the couple's son, who was in another room, told residents that he did not witness what happened between his parents. Community members subsequently attempted to get help for Adenike, but she reportedly died from her injuries.
As residents tried to establish what had happened, they reportedly discovered that Abidemi was no longer at the residence. Members of the community development association began searching for him.
They later received information that the cleric had been struck by a vehicle in the Ifo area of Ogun State. Police reportedly took him to a hospital, where members of the community confirmed his identity. He also died from injuries sustained in the road incident.
The deaths have raised questions about what happened between the couple before they were found in the separate locations. While some community members said the couple had experienced disagreements in the past, there has been no official conclusion establishing the precise sequence of events or the circumstances that led to Abidemi being on the road.
The cleric's younger sister also claimed in a video circulating online that the couple had experienced repeated disagreements before the fatal incident. She said they had visited her in April following an earlier altercation, after which the matter was reportedly resolved at a police station.
The sister said she had advised the couple to be patient with each other and avoid fighting, adding that people had previously intervened to help settle their disagreements.
Adenike was reportedly buried on the day of the incident, while Abidemi was buried on September 2. Footage cited by local reports showed clerics performing burial rites over the evangelist's remains.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said an investigation is ongoing. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Opeyemi Oluborode said the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The case has left the Akinode/Ibogun community mourning the loss of the couple, while the ongoing police investigation is expected to establish what happened during the domestic confrontation and how the two separate deaths were connected.
For now, claims about the precise cause of the couple's deaths remain subject to investigation. The available accounts establish that Adenike died after being found seriously injured at the couple's home, while Abidemi was later found after reportedly being struck by a vehicle in Ifo. The police have not publicly announced a final determination on the circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
