Jarvis shared the personal account during an interactive session at Pastor Tobi Adegboyega’s church in the United Kingdom, where she appeared alongside her husband, Peller. According to Jarvis, her early years were shaped by an unstable family situation. She said her mother had bipolar disorder and that living with her could be difficult and emotionally draining. Jarvis described periods when her mother was affectionate and other times when her behaviour became difficult for the family to cope with. She said her mother had travelled outside the country before returning to Nigeria while pregnant with her, leaving Jarvis without a relationship with her biological father during her formative years. One of the most striking parts of her account was her description of how the sisters would watch cooking videos on TikTok while they were hungry, simply to look at food they could not afford.
She said they would watch the videos, salivate over the meals and eventually pray and cry because there was little they could do about their situation. The memory provides a stark contrast with the way TikTok is now associated with Jarvis's public career and financial success.
The same platform that once provided a way for the sisters to distract themselves from hunger would eventually become the unexpected route through which they began earning money.
Jarvis said a friend introduced her to TikTok livestreaming after telling her that creators could make money by going live. At first, she was shy and uncertain about appearing online. She also said her family was not comfortable with social media, meaning she and her sister had to deal with the possibility of disapproval at home while trying to explore the opportunity.
Their first attempt was modest. Jarvis recalled that she went live with her sister and attracted about 200 views, eventually earning around $5. In today's terms, the amount might appear insignificant, but Jarvis said it was a major moment for them because they were experiencing serious financial difficulties at the time.
The small payment demonstrated to the sisters that social media could generate actual income, even if they did not yet know where the opportunity would eventually lead. They continued livestreaming and gradually moved towards creating content.
Jarvis said her motivation was not initially fame or celebrity status. She wanted to help her sister and find a way for both of them to provide for themselves. The financial pressure that had once made school fees and food difficult to afford therefore became one of the reasons she was willing to experiment with an unfamiliar form of work.
