Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Wizkid brought the 2026 edition of Afro Plus Fest to a close in Maryland, United States, on Sunday, using the festival’s final night to mark 15 years since his breakthrough in the music industry.
The 35-year-old singer headlined the closing night of the three-day festival, which ran from September 4 to 6 at the Northwest Stadium Complex in Landover, Maryland. His appearance added a major milestone to an already significant weekend for African music and the wider diaspora.
Wizkid’s 15-year journey dates back to 2011, when he rose to prominence with “Holla at Your Boy”, the breakout single from his debut album, Superstar. Since then, he has developed from one of Nigeria’s most prominent young artists into one of the leading international figures associated with the global expansion of Afrobeats.
His Afro Plus Fest performance provided an opportunity to draw from different stages of that career, with reports highlighting songs including “Daddy Yo”, “Bad to Me”, “Caro”, “Essence” and “Ojuelegba” among the tracks performed during his set. The selection reflected a catalogue that spans his early Nigerian breakthrough, his later international success and the evolution of his sound over the past decade and a half.
The significance of Wizkid’s appearance also extends beyond the anniversary itself. Afro Plus Fest was created around the idea of bringing African, Caribbean and American sounds together for audiences in the diaspora, and the 2026 edition expanded from its one-day debut in 2025 to a three-day event at the Northwest Stadium Complex. The inaugural edition attracted more than 20,000 ticket holders, according to local reporting.
The festival's lineup reflected that wider ambition. Davido headlined Friday, Alkaline led Saturday and Wizkid closed Sunday, while the broader programme featured artists from Afrobeats, hip-hop, dancehall, amapiano, soca and other genres. Tems, Ayra Starr, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, Adekunle Gold, Lil Baby and Latto were among the other major names associated with the 2026 festival.
For Wizkid, the performance came at a time when Afrobeats has become increasingly established in the American and international music markets. His own career has been closely connected to that expansion, with collaborations and global hits helping introduce Nigerian music to audiences far beyond Africa.
“Essence”, his collaboration with Tems, became one of the most prominent international Afrobeats records of its era, while his earlier collaboration with Drake on “One Dance” became a major global chart success. His career has also included a Grammy Award and several internationally recognised albums, reinforcing his position within the generation of African artists that helped push Afrobeats into mainstream global conversation.
Afro Plus Fest itself is also growing alongside that international interest. Organisers expanded the event to three days and two major stages for 2026, with the festival positioned as a meeting point for African, Caribbean and American music and culture. Organisers had projected attendance of up to 40,000 fans per day, although projected figures should not be confused with confirmed attendance.
Wizkid's closing performance therefore represented more than another festival appearance. It linked a personal career milestone with the wider story of African music's expanding international audience, while placing one of Afrobeats' most recognisable stars at the centre of a festival built specifically around that cultural crossover.
After 15 years in the industry, Wizkid's appearance at Afro Plus Fest offered a fitting snapshot of how far both the singer and the sound associated with his generation have travelled — from the release of “Holla at Your Boy” in 2011 to commanding the closing stage of a major diaspora festival in the United States in 2026.
