Abiodun assures Ijebuland of peaceful Awujale succession, calls for patience

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged the people of Ijebuland to remain patient as the state government works towards a peaceful and broadly accepted process for selecting the next Awujale, the traditional ruler of Ijebuland.

The governor gave the assurance on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode, according to a statement issued by his media adviser, Kayode Akinmade, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Abiodun acknowledged the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of the Ijebu people. He appealed to residents to remain calm while the necessary procedures for choosing a successor are being concluded.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for about 65 years and was one of the most prominent traditional rulers in Yorubaland.

The succession process has faced delays, with the Ogun State Government previously suspending proceedings amid petitions from security agencies and other stakeholders. The prolonged vacancy has generated calls from community leaders and members of the ruling house for the process to move forward.

Abiodun said his administration was giving the matter the attention it deserved and wanted the emergence of a new monarch to be peaceful and enjoy broad support among the people of Ijebuland.

The selection of a traditional ruler involves established customary procedures and relevant authorities. The governor’s latest assurance comes amid continued public interest in when a successor will emerge and how the remaining stages of the process will be completed.

At the same meeting, Abiodun discussed economic development plans for Ogun East, including oil exploration activities around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. He said these initiatives, alongside the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, could attract investment and create employment opportunities if successfully developed.

The governor also said the meeting was intended to strengthen communication between the government and residents, provide an opportunity for community representatives to raise concerns and discuss the administration’s development plans.

The Awujale succession remains an important cultural issue for Ijebuland. Residents will be watching for further official announcements on the completion of the selection process and the emergence of the next monarch.
