Iseyin council sponsors 18 students for university education in Oyo

The Iseyin Local Government Council in Oyo State has sponsored 18 indigenes to pursue higher education at Abiola Ajimobi Technical University in Ibadan over the past three years, as part of efforts to expand educational opportunities for young people in the community.

The council chairman, Rasaq Fadiran, disclosed this on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while speaking with journalists in Ibadan.

Fadiran said the scholarship beneficiaries were selected through a screening process conducted by the institution and were enrolled in programmes covering medical fields, engineering, technology and basic digital skills.

According to the chairman, the initiative is designed to support academically promising students and equip them with knowledge and practical skills that could contribute to the development of Iseyin, Oyo State and the country at large.

He attributed the programme's implementation to the support of the Oyo State Government under Governor Seyi Makinde, saying the administration provided an enabling environment for the local government to assist students seeking opportunities in higher education.

Fadiran said his administration had sponsored 18 indigenes since he assumed office three years ago, adding that the initiative was intended to create opportunities for young people whose education could benefit both their families and the wider community.

The chairman expressed optimism that investment in education, particularly in medicine, engineering and technology, would help develop the skills required to address future social and economic challenges.

Six beneficiaries of the scholarship programme for 2026 reportedly resumed academic activities on Monday after participating in orientation programmes organised by the university's management.

The initiative highlights the role local governments can play in supporting access to tertiary education through targeted financial assistance. However, the long-term impact of the programme will depend on sustained funding, the academic progress of beneficiaries and the opportunities available to graduates after completing their studies.

Further details about the total cost of the scholarship scheme, the specific expenses covered and the criteria for future beneficiaries were not disclosed in the report.
