Neville says Carrick’s Manchester United job is in danger after Bournemouth defeat

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has warned that Michael Carrick’s position as head coach has become increasingly difficult to defend following the club’s disappointing run of results.

Neville’s comments came after United suffered a 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, October 25, a result that intensified pressure on Carrick and raised fresh questions about the team’s performances.

Speaking after the match, Neville suggested that the club was likely to dismiss Carrick, saying he believed the manager’s position had become extremely difficult. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also called for Carrick to be relieved of his duties, arguing that a change could benefit both the club and the manager.

However, Neville did not place all the blame on Carrick. The former United defender strongly criticised the players, accusing some of them of failing to demonstrate the professionalism and commitment expected at a club of Manchester United’s stature.

Neville argued that the team’s poor performances had become a pattern and expressed concern that Carrick was being left to shoulder responsibility for problems extending beyond the manager’s control. He also questioned the club’s leadership and decision-making, insisting that accountability should not stop with the person in charge of the team.

Carrick’s position came under particular scrutiny after the Bournemouth defeat, which followed a heavy loss to Como in the Champions League. The results added to concerns about United’s form and the manager’s ability to restore consistency.

Despite predicting that Carrick would probably be dismissed, Neville later expressed surprise and relief when Manchester United decided to give his former team-mate more time. He said he hoped Carrick could persuade the players to improve their performances and begin working together again.

The situation leaves Carrick facing mounting pressure to deliver better results, while the club must consider whether changing the manager would address its wider problems. United’s upcoming matches could prove important in determining whether the team can recover and ease the scrutiny surrounding the head coach.

For Manchester United, the challenge extends beyond one defeat. The club must find a way to improve performances, restore confidence and establish accountability across the squad and its leadership as the season continues.
