The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has urged Nigerians living in France to remain calm, avoid confrontations and respect the laws of their host country amid ongoing protests and concerns about public safety.
The commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made the appeal in a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, through the commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
Dabiri-Erewa advised Nigerians in France to exercise restraint, avoid violence and provocation, and cooperate peacefully with lawful instructions from French authorities. She also encouraged members of the Nigerian community to prioritise peaceful coexistence and conduct themselves responsibly during the period of unrest.
The commission warned against spreading rumours and unverified information, particularly on social media, urging Nigerians to rely on credible sources and verified safety guidance before sharing information about developments in their locations.
NiDCOM also advised Nigerians whose safety or rights may be at risk to seek appropriate legal assistance and contact relevant emergency or consular services when necessary. The commission said responsible conduct and respect for the laws of the host country remain important for Nigerians living abroad.
The appeal comes amid demonstrations in France linked to concerns including the cost of living, public services and working conditions. Some protests have been accompanied by clashes and disorder, raising concerns about public safety in affected areas.
French authorities have taken security measures in response to the unrest, including deploying thousands of police officers ahead of demonstrations. The situation has drawn attention to the need for residents and foreign nationals to remain alert, follow official instructions and avoid areas where confrontations are taking place.
NiDCOM also called on Nigerian community leaders, families, students, professionals and associations across France to promote unity, peace and responsible behaviour. The commission emphasised that Nigerians in the diaspora have a shared responsibility to respect their host country's institutions while maintaining a positive image of Nigeria.
The advisory serves as a reminder for Nigerians in France to monitor reliable local updates, comply with lawful directives and seek assistance through appropriate channels if they encounter safety concerns. NiDCOM's central message is that calm, caution and respect for the law should guide the community's response as the situation develops.
