The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, is reported to have inaugurated 49 projects aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of Nigerian Army personnel.
The reported initiative aligns with the Army’s “Soldier First” philosophy, which places the welfare of officers and soldiers at the centre of efforts to improve morale, discipline and operational effectiveness.
The Nigerian Army has continued to invest in accommodation and other infrastructure intended to improve living conditions for personnel and their families. Recent projects include housing units under the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers scheme in Jos, as well as residential facilities at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Giri, Abuja.
At the commissioning of 80 housing units in Jos in July 2026, Shaibu said improved living conditions were an important investment in soldiers’ welfare and operational readiness. The Army has also announced further housing developments in different parts of the country.
The projects form part of wider efforts to address accommodation shortages and provide serving personnel with better facilities. Adequate housing and improved welfare support can help reduce the pressures faced by military families and contribute to personnel morale.
However, the specific locations, categories and costs of the reported 49 projects could not be independently confirmed from the available reports. Further details from the Nigerian Army would help establish the full scope of the inauguration and the number of personnel expected to benefit.
The effectiveness of such initiatives will ultimately depend not only on completing infrastructure projects but also on maintaining the facilities, ensuring transparent use of public funds and addressing the wider welfare needs of soldiers serving across the country.
