Shagari Urges Northern Voters to Back Tinubu for Second Term in 2027

Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor Mukhtar Shehu Shagari has urged voters across Northern Nigeria to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election, citing infrastructure development and ongoing government reforms.

Shagari, who also served as Minister of Water Resources, made the appeal while congratulating Tinubu, leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other party stakeholders following the party’s presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State on Saturday.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Musa Ubandawaki, Shagari described the gathering as evidence of the party’s organisational strength and determination to mobilise support for Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election.

He said the participation of party leaders, northern governors, political stakeholders and grassroots supporters highlighted the importance of the region in Nigeria’s electoral landscape. He also stressed that cooperation among party members and effective engagement with citizens would be important to the APC’s efforts to secure another presidential victory.

Shagari pointed to infrastructure development as one of the reasons he believes the President deserves continued support. He specifically commended the Kaduna-Abuja dual carriageway project, saying improved road networks could ease the movement of people and goods, support businesses and contribute to economic activity.

According to the former deputy governor, investment in transportation and other public infrastructure could benefit farmers, small-scale traders, transport operators and other economic groups. He argued that sustaining such projects would help create opportunities and improve the business environment.

However, Shagari also urged the Federal Government to give continued attention to security, economic stability, employment generation and social protection. He said political support should be accompanied by tangible improvements in people’s living conditions, alongside transparency, accountability and responsive leadership.

He further argued that a second term for Tinubu would provide an opportunity for the administration to consolidate its existing projects and continue implementing its policies. He expressed confidence that continued government programmes could contribute to national development if they produced visible benefits for citizens.

Shagari also commended Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu for what he described as his administration’s efforts in infrastructure, social welfare and human capital development.

His appeal comes as political parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election. The extent to which Shagari’s endorsement will influence voters in the North remains uncertain, with electoral support likely to depend on a range of political, economic and security considerations.

Tinubu’s re-election prospects will ultimately be determined by voters at the ballot box, while public assessments of the administration’s performance are expected to remain an important part of the political debate leading up to the election.
