Troops kill 48 suspected terrorists, repel coordinated attacks in Borno and Yobe

Troops of the Nigerian military’s Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, have reportedly killed 48 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters while repelling coordinated attacks on military positions in Borno and Yobe states.

The engagements took place between October 29 and 30, 2026, at Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and the North East Theatre Training School (NETTS) in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, according to the military.

In Bitta, troops supported by air assets repelled an assault launched on the night of October 29. The military said the combined response inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers and forced them to abandon their operation.

A separate confrontation occurred at NETTS in Buni Yadi, where a large group of ISWAP fighters reportedly attacked the military facility from the evening of October 29 into the early hours of October 30. The battle lasted approximately five hours and involved coordinated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, alongside air and ground operations.

The Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Captain Mohammed Goni, said troops recovered a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition after the fighting. The recovered items reportedly included 42 AK-47 rifles, five PKT machine guns, four general-purpose machine guns, one 60mm mortar, 105 AK-47 magazines, two video cameras and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The military also confirmed that one soldier was killed during the engagements, while two others sustained minor injuries and were receiving treatment.

Operation HADIN KAI described the outcome as a setback for the insurgents, saying the operations had weakened their capabilities in the North-East. The military continues to conduct operations aimed at disrupting Boko Haram and ISWAP activities and protecting military installations and surrounding communities.

The latest engagements come as security forces continue to face attacks on military positions in the North-East, where the insurgency has persisted for more than a decade. Although the reported casualties and recovered weapons represent operational gains, sustained efforts will be needed to improve security and protect residents across the affected states.
