Messi, Yamal Named Among 2026 Ballon d’Or Nominees

Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal have been named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, putting the eight-time winner and the emerging Barcelona star in contention for football’s most prestigious individual honour.

France Football announced the nominees on Tuesday, September 8, with several of the biggest names in world football making the shortlist. Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham and Rodri are also among the contenders.

Messi’s nomination is particularly notable because it is his first Ballon d’Or nomination since 2023, when he won the award for a record eighth time. His return to the shortlist comes after another productive campaign for Inter Miami and Argentina.

Yamal’s inclusion further reflects his rapid rise at the highest level of the sport. The Barcelona forward is also nominated for the Young Talent of the Year award, adding another opportunity for recognition to what has been a remarkable period in his career.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or will be presented on October 26 at the London Palladium Theatre in London. The ceremony will be particularly significant as the award celebrates its 70th anniversary and is being held outside Paris for the first time.

With established champions such as Messi competing alongside a new generation led by Yamal, the final result is expected to generate considerable debate before the winner is announced.
